Since its opening in 2014 the Sgt. Mark Gallagher Memorial Vocational School, or ÉFPMAG as it is known in Haiti, graduated more than 200 students coming from the peasant communities in and around Rivière Froide where the school is situated. These young people now have a profession allowing them to have a more secure economic future and will allow them to contribute to the economy of their communities.
As with all of the non-public schools in Haiti that make up 85% of the schools in the country, ÉFPMAG must rely on student tuition and funding from donors to continue to operate. Though the school has been officially accredited by the Haitian ministry of education for a number of years, it has received no funding whatsoever from the Haitian government. Student tuition has been kept to a minimum and a bursary programme has been set up to ensure the school is accessible to children from poor peasant families.
As is the case for all vocational schools, it more costly to operate than either a primary or secondary school. Teaching materials and tools must be replaced in the workshops, computers must be updated and teachers must upgrade their knowledge and skills.
All of which requires the support of organisations such as AQANU and Gallagher Club 100.
Funds collected by the Mark Gallagher 100 Club will be used to fund the purchase of tools, instruments and the non-renewable materials required for the pedagogical activities related to the each of the programs offered at the school. The funds may also be used to upgrade teacher and management skills as well as some half bursaries. The requests for funds relating to a specific program will come from the School administration. The Gallagher 100 Club and AQANU will analyse the requests and agree on how to best respond to the needs expressed by the school administration.
In the past two or three years the funding requests have been related to upgrading teacher computer skills, the purchase of new equipment for the kitchens in the hotel cooking program and replacing computers in the secretarial programs.
Your 100 dollar donation will ensure that Gallagher 100 Club and AQANU will be able to continue responding to the basic needs of EFPMG allowing this one of a kind vocational school in Haiti to serve the needs of the surrounding peasant communities.
AQANU will provide tax receipts for all donations of $20 and more. The enclosed form explains the various ways you can make your donation and receive your tax receipt.
